Know Who You Are, And Own It

with Victoria Hazell

Introduce yourself! Who are you?
Hello! My name is Victoria Hazell.
I’m 26 years old, residing in Toronto.
I’m a young, passionate, ambitious, down to earth female.
I was born in Canada, however my background is Guyanese, Chinese and Dutch.
I love my job, I’m a barber and hairstylist. I also enjoy living a healthy and cooking, travelling and learning and being creative.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice I’ve ever received and experienced is “trust the timing of your life”. As I’ve grown, I have learned that your journey isn’t the same as the next person, and that we bloom in different times. We often compare ourselves, especially with social media these days. The best thing you can do is keep your eyes on the prize, focus on your goals and dreams and never settle. In time, you will end up where you always wanted to be.

What message do you think every woman should hear?
The message I believe every woman should hear is “Be yourself, because you are beautiful”. In a world, where everything has become overlooked and replaced with vanity, and status remain who you are and be proud of it. Know who you are, and own it. We need to continue to spread the message that being who you are in your own skin is enough. True beauty will always come from the inside. So be kind, be you, be beautiful.

What do you love most about yourself?
The one thing I love most about myself is how caring I am and generous I am. Although, in some cases in my life I thought it was a bad thing I’ve learned to embrace is because it is who I am. If i can help in some way, without getting anything in return I am happy. We all need help, somewhere along the way. I live my life to make every moment count, with loved ones or not. You never know when your time will be up.

Do you remember a specific time you overcame adversity?
Growing up in my house hold wasn’t the easiest or happiest of times. While in high school, things took a turn for the worst and it was probably one of the most challenging times in my families life. Me and my sister had to grow up fast, and had to learn to keep pushing through hoping for better days. We didn’t get the typical experience of being a child, or teenager. We had bigger struggles on our plate, but it made us who we are today. It kept our heads on straight, focused and realized what was really important in this life.

What motivates you most?
What motivates me the most I would say is Faith. To believe that you can always change, adapt, learn and move forward if you want too. If you believe in yourself, and have faith it can always push you farther. Nothing is permanent, you are not a tree. You decide what kind of life you want to live and who you want to become. The power is in your hands.

How do you manage your work-life balance?
I manage my work life balance with the philosophy that money is always replaceable. Family and time isn’t. So now, I make time for what is important to me and spend it with who I love. When I was working long hours, I missed out on time with family that i’ll never be able to get back, or often times beat myself up for taking a day off. The more I grow, I’ve realized working hard is important for what you want, but so is your “me” time. Whatever it means to you, you must always take care of your mind and body. Without it, you can’t take care of anything else.

What do you do on a daily basis to grow and move forward?
On a daily basis, first and foremost I always give thanks. I do my best to maintain a healthy lifestyle,by working out, and eating healthy. I also try to spread positive energy to as many people I come into contact with. I also love reading, I usually read before I go to sleep for at least 10 minutes, and try to soak up the knowledge of what I read to use to move forward in my life.

What is something on your bucket list?
My bucket list.. is quite long lol but one that is always there is to travel to Indonesia. I’ve always dreamed of going to Bali, I often watch movies where they have filmed there to get a chance to see what it would be like when I do. I remember I used to watch “Eat, Pray, Love” almost every single day because it brought me peace to watch her journey that soon led her to a place in heaven. I have tons of pictures and articles of what I’d want to see when I go, I have a feeling I won’t want to come back once I do.

Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration in art, the industry I’m in and those around me. I’m blessed to be around artists of all kinds, who radiate their creativity through their work. Being in the beauty industry, it is always evolving. I attend many classes, and events which brew new ideas, techniques and passion. Whenever I leave, I always have more fire in my heart to create something new, or to just improve myself on my journey to becoming the woman I’ve always wanted to be.

What is your greatest fear?
My greatest fear would be not fulfilling my full potential. Not fulfilling my dreams within myself and for my family. I believe we all have a purpose, I want to be able to build and share it was as many lives as I can before I go and leave a foundation built on what I believe in.
