Hi! My name is Tori Haughey, and I am a lifestyle influencer, blogger, YouTuber, and serial entrepreneur. Some of you may know me from my YouTube channel, “Trending With Tori”, where my primary focus is on beauty, fashion, business, and lifestyle trends. If not, well, I am a small-town, 20-something, Jersey girl with big dreams and a strong desire to make them happen! In fact, in June of 2019, I launched my first business while also working my relatively new full-time job in the city. Today, I am the proud owner of Sweet On You Boutique, an online clothing company that empowers women to feel confident not just in their style, but in their skin.
I’ve always had a creative and entrepreneurial spirit, so opening a business has always been something I wanted to do. That’s actually why I majored in Entrepreneurship in college! But starting an online boutique was not my initial dream. If you had asked me in college what business I wanted to open, I would have told you a cupcake bakery (talk about career change lol)! What inspired me to open an online clothing boutique was actually during my time out of college.
When I was finishing up my last few semesters in college, I developed anxiety about life after school. Every day, I questioned whether or not I should have chosen a different major—other than Entrepreneurship—one that wasn’t so risky and uncertain. Would I find a job straight out of college, like my friends? Am I capable of running a business on my own? To be honest, I even questioned my own self-worth.
It wasn’t until I took my first job out of college that I was able to finally pick myself up. The position was not what I had hoped for after my many months of searching, but I needed to “get my feet wet”. Within a few weeks, my feet were soaked in unhappiness. That’s when it hit me. My a-ha moment. Every day I was working for someone else’s dream and losing touch of my own. What was I waiting for? If I wanted my dream to become a reality, I had to make it happen. So, I quit that job, found one that better suited me, and I set to work.
Almost a year and a half later, I launched my first business (a huge dream of mine), and I did so while working my relatively new full-time job in the city. Now, I am the most confident me I have ever been.
I know who I am.
I know what I want for my life.
I’m not afraid of uncertainty. I embrace it.
And, I want the same for others.
This is what led me to start Sweet On You Boutique.
I still struggle with self-confidence and anxiety.
Just because I am the most confident me I have ever been, this doesn’t mean that I still don’t have my moments of self-doubt. It’s easy to look at someone and think that they have it all together (based off of their Instagram feed and social media). But, the reality is that I’m human. I have my days, just like everyone else, and that’s okay.
I had to learn to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.
In college, my professors would always say that we need to learn how to speak in front of a group of people, pitch ourselves to possible clients and customers, cold-call for marketing, and more. At the time, I never thought I’d actually have to do those things for my business. However, now that I’ve been in the business for 5 months, I’m realizing that they were completely right! If I want my business to succeed and thrive, I have to be comfortable doing the things that scare me!
If I could go back in time…
I would tell myself to have faith and stop letting the opinions of others stop me from doing the things I’m passionate about. I’d tell myself to start the YouTube channel according to my original timeline; I’d tell myself to wear the clothes I want to wear; and I’d tell myself to keep trying when things get difficult. I’d tell 16-year-old me that one day, I’ll have a business that inspires and empowers women that need to feel just like me…confident.
Don’t let the opinions of others get the best of you.
Creating weekly content for YouTube over the past 4 years has definitely allowed for some criticism and doubts from others. I’ve had someone tell me that I am just a cookie cutter image of what everyone else is trying to be, and that I’d never make it big. I’ll never forget that comment. Sure, it was mean and I didn’t appreciate that, but it only made me want to work that much harder. I try not to let others’ comments get the best of me.
Remember that you are capable and worthy.
It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from. You can have whatever it is you want for yourself, so long as you make the effort to go after it. It won’t always be easy, but it will absolutely be worth it. Remember, no one else can do it for you. You have to make the decision. The power is in your hands.
It won’t always be easy.
Finishing my last few semesters in college was a tough time for me. I developed anxiety about life after school, and every day I wondered if I chose the right major or if I’d find a job. It actually took me a year to find a job out of college, and it was hard. I faced a lot of rejection, and it got extremely discouraging. But, it was during this tough time that I realized I had to just go for what I really wanted in life. That’s when I started writing my business plan. There was no better time to start.
No one will do it for you.
I learned early on that if I want to be successful, I need to not just have passion, but I also need consistency. There are times when business and life are just flat out hard. But, in order for me to be successful and accomplish my goals in the future, I have to show up for myself every day. I’ve learned to remind myself that my goals are achievable with the right mindset and the courage to keep going.
Remember your “why.”
I think this might be the number one driving force that keeps me motivated. I simply think about why I started Sweet On You Boutique in the first place. I have always wanted to pursue my own passions and turn them into a career for myself. I’ve wanted to create a life I love, doing what I love. And, most importantly, I have wanted to inspire women to feel confident in themselves to do the same. I constantly think about how much I want my business to empower other women to believe in their dreams and to act on them. This thought alone is what gives me the clarity and will power to keep going in moments when I feel like I can’t.
Ask for help!
I don’t have one particular mentor that has taught me everything I know about owning a business. However, I do have a community that I turn to when I need advice and help. When I’m lacking in motivation or feeling uninspired, I reach out to those I’ve connected with on YouTube, Instagram, or in Facebook groups! I’ve recently joined a few groups for boutique owners, and it’s amazing to hear advice from other female leaders in my industry. It’s nice to know that they’ve encountered some of the same difficulties I may currently be having. They have the life experiences to help me through, whenever I need it. I’m so thankful for those in my community!
Continue to grow and move forward.
I make it a goal of mine to learn something new every day. I personally believe that investing in yourself is game-changing for you and your business. When you continue to educate yourself, you stay inspired, maintain your passion, keep up with the trends, and ultimately, become a better leader. So, I find a way to learn something new by reading inspirational books, listening to motivational podcasts, attending networking events and seminars, and researching the Internet.
Find your passion.
My biggest passion is helping every day, young women realize how beautiful and capable they are, and to ultimately help them feel more confident in their skin. I want others to know that I’m just a regular girl from a small town in New Jersey, who didn’t come from a rich family, and who doesn’t have this crazy dramatic or sad story. I am just a young, 20-something-year-old woman who believes in herself. I have moments of self-doubt, but I’m able to push through these times and truly see how capable I am. At the end of the day, I want to show other women that they can be whoever they want to be. They can accomplish the goals they set out for themselves and follow their dreams so long as they believe in themselves and are confident in who they are.
