Take Control of Your Life

with Samantha Peszek

Introduce yourself! Who are you?
I’m a Sagittarius, I’m a type A personality and an 8 on the Enneagram. I love to have fun, but when I set a goal for something, nothing can stand in my way. I love inspiring people and helping others be the best they can be. I love to travel, meet new people, and learn new things. I am an Olympic gymnast and competed for UCLA. Currently, I’m a sports broadcaster and founder of the Beam Queen Bootcamp.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
My parents told me when I was little that I could do anything I set my mind to and it’s still the best advice I’ve ever received.

What would you say to 16 year old you?
To enjoy the journey and be a little more forgiving to myself. It’s impossible to be perfect all the time.

What is your greatest fear?
Not living up to my potential.

Have you ever had anyone doubt you? How did that make you feel?
Definitely. As a gymnast, I wasn’t very flexible and had a lot of fears. There were a LOT of people that didn’t believe I could accomplish my goal of going to the Olympics, but the one thing that never wavered was the belief I had in myself. I liked proving people wrong and showing that hard work always wins.

What message do you think every woman should hear?
You are valued, important, and have a voice. You have ownership over your life and can accomplish anything you want to. I think that’s a really powerful feeling to take control of your life no matter what situation you’re currently in. My college coach told me that you can say anything to anyone, as long as it’s honest and with good intention. That was really freeing for me.

What is it like to be a businesswoman?
I learn something new everyday. It’s important to look at obstacles as challenges to solve rather than burdens or mistakes. What I’ve learned this year is that a lot of being a businesswoman is having confidence and trusting my gut instinct when making decisions.

What is your favorite thing about where you live?
I love living in Santa Monica because the weather is always nice and it’s such an active and healthy place to live. Hiking and running on the beach are some of my favorite ways to workout.
What do you love most about yourself?
I love that I can juggle a lot of hats and that I took a risk out of college to become an entrepreneur. I’ve always been fearless when going after my dreams.

Do you remember a specific time you overcame adversity?
As a businesswoman, this happens daily. If a staff member is sick and can’t attend an event last minute or if my registration site seems to be finicky, there’s always something that pops up. I tend to react pretty calm, which I think is helpful. I also try to learn from the situation. It’s helpful to reflect and figure out how to improve for the future, but also to remind yourself of all the things that went right. It’s tough to remember to pat yourself on the back too.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned along the way?
Our mission with the Beam Queen Bootcamp is to inspire and empower as many gymnasts as possible while improving their confidence on beam. I’m a brand freak, so it’s important to me that every location is branded as similarly as possible. Occasionally, the set up of an event is not exactly how I want it, so it’s been a big lesson for me to focus on the big picture, which is helping gymnasts. As long as we’re doing this, I should be proud of the event I’ve created. This is definitely something I’m still learning since I am such a perfectionist!

What motivates you most?
Knowing that I have a platform to inspire others. I love seeing gymnasts get that “ah-ha” moment when we’re working with them. It’s also very validating when we get emails from parents and coaches after telling us how much their gymnast benefitted from the event.

What is your favorite meal?
I love sushi!

Do you have a mentor? If so, what did they teach you?
Yes, I actually have many mentors depending on the topic. If I had to brag about myself, I think this might be my strength. I’ve done a really good job surrounding myself with hard working, intelligent, and successful mentors in every area of my business. I currently have a podcast called, “I Have Cool Friends,” because I’m constantly bragging about all the amazing people, friends, and mentors I have in my life. I feel extremely lucky in this regard.

Why did you start your boot camp?
Beam was my biggest nemesis growing up and it’s everything I wish I had when I was a young gymnast. It’s cool for me to give back to the sport that gave me everything.

Were you ever nervous before a big competition?
Definitely, but to me, the nerves were more like adrenaline in a good way and actually helped me compete better. The more pressure the better. =)
