What's The Best Advice You've Ever Received ?

With Samantha O'Brochta

Introduce yourself! Who are you?
I’m Samantha O’Brochta, a 20-something creative who loves to travel the world. I was raised in the Pacific Northwest, but have lived abroad in London, and my “sort of” home base right now is New York City. I’m a digital nomad, so I am location independent and spend a good amount of time outside of the United States and also hop between the East and West coasts when I need to. I work in digital and social media as a content producer, but I also am an actress, singer, and comedian so I spend a lot of time on stage. In my spare time, I write and photograph for my travel and lifestyle blogSome Call Me Adventurous.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
My mother told me that I can’t control other people’s actions, but I can control my own reaction to their actions. It’s helped a lot when I’ve been stressed out or taken guilt upon myself that I shouldn’t be harboring.

What would you say to 16 year old you?
I would tell her that life really will get better once you can take control of your own destiny. I was a frustrated 16-year-old who just wanted to get away from my hometown and off to college. I wish I had known that things really would be as great as I imagined. Hopefully telling her that would calm her down a bit and allow her to relax and enjoy the last couple years of her youth.

What is your greatest fear?
Caterpillars! I know that’s random, but they are so gross to me! The tent caterpillars would invade my hometown every spring for years and they were literally everywhere and it was straight out of a horror movie. But as for more “adult” fears, I am very afraid of dying before I accomplish things with my life.

What message do you think every woman should hear?
Every woman should hear that they are beautiful, worthy, and able to do whatever it is that they put their heart into. There is no reason to instill in a young woman that there are things about them that aren’t good enough for the path they wish to follow.

What do you love most about yourself?
I love my ambition. I am such a big dreamer and I am always looking ahead to envision what I want my future to look like. While it can be stressful sometimes, I love that I have the drive to make things happen in my life and not wait around for opportunities to just fall into my lap.

What is the biggest thing you’ve learned along the way?
I can’t live my life trying to make other people impressed or happy. If I try to do that, then I’m living for others and not myself. I can only impress myself and make myself happy through my choices and actions and I really have to stop worrying about how I’m perceived by others.

Why do you love to travel?
Traveling shows me all the beautiful things the world has to offer. There is so much more to life than your hometown or even your home country. I love to see and experience new things and travel gives me that boost of curiosity and wonder that I crave.

What motivates you most?
The mere knowledge that most women of color in the past did not have the chances and opportunities I am lucky enough to have in the modern age. If I had been born even 50 years earlier, I may not have been allowed to pursue my passions in the way that women are encouraged to now. This is what gives me my drive; to know that so many women fought for the rights that I now am able to take advantage of.

How do you manage your work-life balance?
In the past, it was hard to have a life while working, so I decided to change that and create a life for myself where my work could be intertwined into my life without being disrupted. As a remote worker, I can work from anywhere in the world, which means I have the freedom I’ve always craved.

What do you do on a daily basis to grow and move forward?
I am always dreaming and thinking of what else I can do to improve my life in a way that will make me happy. If I’m starting to feel stagnant, I start to put an action plan into place to make sure I’m working towards something bigger and better.

If you weren’t doing the job you have now, what would you be doing?
It would be incredible to be in the cast of a Broadway show.

What is something on your bucket list?
I want to do a self-drive tour around New Zealand someday. Perhaps rent or purchase a camper van and just spend a month or two exploring the country.

What are your biggest passions?
All things artistic. Photography, singing, acting, dancing, designing, writing, filmmaking, and creating.
