What Message Do You Think Every Woman Should Hear ?

With Sam Maggs

Introduce yourself! Who are you?
Hi, I’m Sam Maggs! I write books, comics, and video games. My next book, Girl Squads, features twenty awesome female friendships from history, and it comes out October 2nd. I’ve also just started as a Senior Writer at Insomniac Games, the studio currently working on a Spider-Man game for Marvel. Occasionally I do on-camera hosting and live moderating. I really love doughnuts and the Oxford comma.

What is one thing no one really knows about you?
I am super, super shy. A lot of people assume that, because of the public speaking I do, that I’m naturally outgoing or gregarious, but I’m not at all! I’m a very awkward and weird introvert. It took a lot of practice to get good at talking in front of crowds.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
“Act as if ye have faith and faith shall be given to you.” In other words: fake it til you make it. We all suffer from impostor syndrome. None of us know what we’re doing. You belong here just as much as the rest of us.

What would you say to 16 year old you?
Don’t let anyone shame you for loving the things that you love. One day, people will even think you’re cool because of them.

What is your greatest fear?
The unknown! I even get anxiety going new places, like walking into bars and not knowing where my friends are going to be. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy has been great for this.

Have you ever had anyone doubt you? How did that make you feel?
Oh absolutely. I used to get my “geek cred” tested by guys who assumed I was faking my nerdy interests for attention, or something. It made me feel like I didn’t belong. And then it made me feel angry. I don’t let anyone get away with that anymore!

What message do you think every woman should hear?
We are stronger together than we are apart. Don’t let the patriarchy convince you that we should be competing against each other instead of cooperating with each other.

What is your favorite thing about where you live?
I just moved to LA about two months ago, but so far I love that there’s always something to do, the weather is always beautiful, the beach is only forty minutes away, and so many amazing nerdy folks live here!

What do you love most about yourself?
My tenacity. No matter how much it may scare me, I always say yes to new opportunities. Also, my butt.

Why do you love to travel?
The food! My favorite thing about traveling is finding new and delicious places to eat. Traveling alone is one of my favorite things in life; I love wandering the streets of a new city, finding a cool restaurant, and sitting quietly with a book or my phone while I enjoy something tasty. It’s the best.

What motivates you most?
I probably shouldn’t say “spite” here, right? I’m kidding (mostly). I just want to make books and movies and games for the girl I was when I was sixteen and I felt like I didn’t belong in the geek space. I hope that girls growing up now feel like they’re an important part of this world and can grow up to create their own stories, too.

How do you manage your work-life balance?
Poorly. I’m a workaholic. But I’ve gotten really into power lifting lately which helps a lot for stress relief, and does count as a hobby!

What is your favorite meal?
Pasta. I’m obsessed with carbs. I could eat pasta and doughnuts every single day and be happy.

What do you do on a daily basis to grow and move forward?
I read a lot. Fiction, non-fiction, news, comics – I love taking in new stories and information. It keeps you fresh.

If you weren’t doing the job you have now, what would you be doing?
Sitting at my cabin in northern Ontario reading a book in silence.

What is something on your bucket list?
I need to be the model in a hairbrushing ASMR video. If you can make this happen, call me.
