Never Settle

with Sabrina Washington

Introduce yourself! Who are you?
Hello! My name is Sabrina! I was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, FL and I moved to Nashville, TN in 2006 at the age of 21! I’m  34 year old years old and I own my own business, a nanny agency based right here in Middle, TN.

What is one thing no one really knows about you?
I am SUCH AN OPEN BOOK at my age, especially. I can be extremely transparent with anyone I meet. However, one thing people may or may not know about me is that I grew up in an extremely sheltered, religious environment. We weren’t allowed to listen to secular music, watch PG13 or rated R movies, along with about 100 more rules and regulations. To this day, there are still so many places I’ve never been, movies I’ve never seen, and music that I don’t connect with. It’s wild the things I still don’t know.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Never Settle. I’ve been given this advice by multiple people during my lifetime. It’s almost as if God has an ongoing joke with me at this point. People from ministers to an uber driver have randomly told me to “Never Settle for anything less than the best.” I consider this a mandate for my life. Reach for the stars and believe that you can have them.

What would you say to 16 year old you?
Chill. Stop writing that you can’t wait to be an adult in your diary. Being an adult means you have to pay bills, girl! Chill!

What is your greatest fear?
Losing a close family or friend.

Have you ever had anyone doubt you? How did that make you feel?
Of course! All of the time! I am a super competitive person by nature. I use other’s doubt to fuel my willingness to prove them wrong. I welcome the naysayers. It puts a little fire under me to get going!

What message do you think every woman should hear?
Never Settle.  Follow your heart. Trust your intuition. You’re right. You’re beautiful. The right person is out there for you. Wait for them. While you wait, stay busy doing things you’re passionate about.

Have you always had confidence in yourself?
Yes and no. I am a naturally confident person. I was raised to believe that I could do anything. Are there times where I wonder if I can actually do something? Yes. But that doesn’t last long at all. I’m convinced that there wasn’t a single mistake that occurred when God made me. I may as well stand in that.

What is your favorite thing about where you live?
Nashville has some of the best food you’ll ever eat! I love going out to eat in Nashville and trying new restaurants!

What do you love most about yourself?
My confidence! I love how sure I am of myself.

Do you remember a specific time you overcame adversity?
I’m a black woman in America, living in the South. I overcome adversity on a daily basis. I seriously couldn’t tell you one specific time.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned along the way?
Never Settle. I know it seems repetitive at this point, but I promise you…every time that I have settled on a decision and gone against my gut intuition, its been awful! I have really learned to trust ME and tune out the noise of those around me.

What motivates you most?
All of the incredible children and nannies that work through my business. They are all so amazing and motivate me to continue helping families, women, and children in my area.
How do you manage your work-life balance?
I give myself Mondays and Fridays off and I GRIND Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday! I call it the Tues/Thurs Grind. When I was working a 9-5, I DREADED Sunday nights. I would be filled with anxiety at the THOUGHT of work on Monday. So I give myself two days off during the work week to catch up on emails, nap, cook, meet a friend for lunch, workout, take a long phone call with my Mom, and BREATHE.

What is your favorite meal?
I mean, pizza is LIFE. Am I right?!

What do you do on a daily basis to grow and move forward?
Pray, meditate, practice positive thinking, and talk to like-minded individuals about what the future is going to look like for us. Because when you grow, so does your crew 🙂

Do you have a mentor? If so, what did they teach you?
I don’t. Oprah Winfrey has been mentoring me since I was 10 years old. She just doesn’t know it 😉

What is one thing people would be surprised to hear about you?
They may be surprised to know that I am a huge Disney fan. I love all things princess movie related. I actually used to perform as Princess Tiana for birthday parties. I did that for about 7 years!

Did you always know what you wanted to do as a career?
Not at all. I wasn’t the best student, so many times I just wanted to be whoever I saw on television at the time. If you asked 10 year old me what I wanted to be, I probably would have said a lawyer like Claire Huxtable (lol). I figured my last job as a director of a private school would be my last stop. God had other plans!

Were you scared to start the process?
Terrified. Do it afraid. It helps with the jitters.

If you weren’t doing the job you have now, what would you be doing?
I probably would have seriously pursued commercial modeling. I always wanted to be in magazines and on tv.

What is something on your bucket list?
To travel to Africa! Specifically Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa. I’d love to do that some day.

Who is your biggest role model? Why?
Oprah Winfrey. She came from NOTHING and defied every odd set against her. She is my HERO!

Where do you find inspiration?
God and everything he’s created. Family. My incredible boyfriend. My best friends who I keep super close.

What are your biggest passions?
I am passionate about love! I am passionate about spreading love, positivity, acceptance, and truth. I am passionate about making a difference in the lives of women and children. I am passionate about living this life to the fullest and chasing every dream I can!
