Introduce yourself! Who are you?
My name is Rachel Ettinger and I do mornings on 97.5 Virgin Radio in London, Ontario Canada! I am also doing my MBA (Masters of Business Administration) at Sir Wilfrid University and I am the creator of Here for Her.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Ah, there’s so much amazing advice I’ve received lately. A big one for me lately in terms of relationships and big decisions is “trust your gut”. It’s so cheesy, but it’s so true. We all see the signs and know either something is not right or we need to make a move, but fear holds us back. Be confident and trust your gut, it’s always right. I also love ““Shift the focus onto yourself”. In difficult situations it’s easy to blame others and feel sorry for ourselves.But every struggle has learning- so shift the focus onto yourself and figure out the learning.
What message do you think every woman should hear?
LOVE YOUR BODY. Having started Here for Her, it’s more obvious than ever that many women do NOT love themselves and associate their body with self-worth. Your weight and your body DOES NOT DEFINE YOU. Once you change your thoughts and speak to yourself in a kind, positive way, your mindset will shift. Be kind to yourself, be positive and be motivating. You have so many other qualities that makes you the way you are. Are you smart? Responsible? Loyal? A great friend? Great at soccer? A trust-worthy person? A caring mother? All of these things make us who we are and make us feel good about ourselves. Your body and your weight do not determine the type of person who are, at your core. Learn to love yourself and your body for what they are- not five pounds lighter or two pilates classes later.
What do you love most about yourself?
Great question! Everyone should have to answer this out-loud or in a journal. I love how I love to learn. I LOVE learning new things (hence why I’m back at school) but I even love learning new things about myself and I am constantly wanting to be better. I have learnt that I am very self-aware- which can be frustrating at times but also a blessing. I am constantly working on being a better version of myself and able to take responsbility for my actions. I am learning so much about myself lately and I’m a very authentic, genuine person.
What motivates you most?
I am my biggest competitor and motivator. I know there’s so much to learn, so many people to meet and there’s not enough time in the day! I know that there are opportunities out there and it’s on all of us to seek them. When you’re a motivated and positive person, good things happen! Like-minded individuals, my friends, my family and mentors motivate me to be better, along with everyone that engages with Here for Her.
What is your favorite meal?
Oh gosh. I love food! My favourite meal would have to be… a strawberry daiquiri on the beach with nachos. Nachos are THE BEST! Haha is that a meal? Sure, why not! I’ve learnt to eat what I want and also exercise when I want because it makes me feel good.
What do you do on a daily basis to grow and move forward?
I journal, set goals for myself and read self-help type motivational books. Podcasts too! Anything about self-discovery and growth, I LOVE listening or reading about. Brene Brown is a favourite of mine and Super Soul Sunday. I’m kind of like a sponge right now- a lot has happened in my life in the past two years and I’m eager to learn more and hear about other’s experiences.
What is something on your bucket list?
To do a solo trip/retreat where I can be off the grid, away from social media and just learn more about myself and meet new people. Also to visit Greece … I am obsessed with Momma Mia and Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants- any movie set in Greece and I NEED to visit! It looks so dreamy.
What are your biggest passions?
Helping others, engaging and improving the community, being a voice for those who may not have one, horse-back riding (I am obsessed with my horse Gidget. She looks like a unicorn!), meeting new people, making genuine, inspiring friendships, exercising and trying new ways to be active, running, trying new coffee shops and delicious restaurants, meeting empowering, confident women in any industry and there’s so much more but those are the highlights! I am passionate about making a difference in the community and being a voice for others that may not be comfortable speaking out. This is why Here for Her motivates me to use my platform to discuss women’s health issues!
My name is Rachel Ettinger, I am a morning show host on 97.5 Virgin Radio and a part-time MBA student at Wilfrid Laurier University. About a year ago, I started Here for Her. Why? I grew up in a very non-judgemental environment. My mom is a RN and we always asked any question we had and spoke openly about our heath. However, once I got to university and lived in residence and with six girls in a house, I realized that my upbringing was not the norm for most women. A lot of my friends (confident and educated invidiuals) were uncomfortable speaking about certain issues and wanted advice. So, once I got into media (radio/tv), I realized that I had a platform and I needed to use it! At the time of starting Here for Her, I was going through a difficult break-up (that’s a story for another time haha), so I channelled all of my anger, sadness, confusion and loneliness into finally creating Here for Her. Here for Her is a social enterprise that aims to reduce the stigma around women’s health through awareness, education, discussions and charity work. Basically the Instagram account is the HUB, with a network of health professionals (physios, doctors, RMTs, therapists, etc.) that give you tips on how to take control of your health. You can ask questions, learn about how to take control of your health and feel empowered to do so. It’s about creating a non-judgemental environment to chat about issues such as mestruation, fertility, pregnancy, body image, eating disorders and other issues and know that you’re not alone. Women’s health issues are REAL ISSUES! For the aspect of charity work, HFH teams up with local businesses, causes and charities to raise awareness and donations about a certain issue or cause. We recently had our first volunteer event at a local family shelter- we had a crafts and spa day! It’s important to bridge the gap and offer millennials an opportunity to make a difference in the community first-hand. It’s all about making it COOL and ACCEPTABLE to discuss all the things we experience as women. We’re challenging the norms and discussing topics that were typically stigmatized or viewed as “shameful” in the past. We also sell fun clothing, such as the PERIOD sweater, with all proceeds going back to local women’s initiatives.

Rachel Ettinger is a morning show host on Virgin Radio London in London, Ontario Canada. She is also doing her MBA part-time at Sir Wilfrid Laurier University. Rachel started Here for Her in July 2017. She has a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Business Admin Degree from St.Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, Canada. She’s been working in the media industry for almost four years. In Rachel’s spare time she loves watching crime shows/documentaries and riding her horse, Gidget.
