What Message Do You Think Every Woman Should Hear ?

With Olivia Smith

 Introduce yourself! Who are you?
Hi! I’m Olivia. I’m a journalist for Good Morning America and ABC News and I live in Los Angeles.

What is one thing no one really knows about you?
I jump roped in the junior Olympics when I was 11 years-old.

What would you say to 16 year old you?
Don’t stress so much. I always worried about where I would go to college, what I would major in, what jobs I’d get, where I’d end up. And it all worked out just fine. I think it’s important to think about these things, but I wish I’d spent less time worrying and I wish I had trusted myself more that I would succeed in achieving my goals.

What is your greatest fear?
Sharks. But I try not to tell people that often because then my friends send me pictures of sharks, which is very mean.
On a more serious level, I think most people fear failure and loss. I try to always remind myself that the only constant is change. The more adaptable I am with my skills and the more in touch I am with my emotions, the more I am equipped to handle and overcome obstacles throughout my life.

Have you ever had anyone doubt you? How did that make you feel?
As a young journalist years ago, there were definitely times I felt others doubt me. It’s not a great feeling, but I ignored it and continued to work hard so no one had any reason to do so.

What message do you think every woman should hear?
Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want. Be reasonable, of course, but ask for something if you want it. No one will ever be able to read your mind. Tell people what you want and then work hard to get it.

What is your favorite thing about where you live?
I love the weather because I love being outside, it makes me happy. I’m also close to my family.

What do you love most about yourself?
My sense of humor and ability to laugh at life. Stephen Hawking once said, “Life would be tragic if it weren’t funny,” and that really stuck with me.

Why do you love to travel?
I love exploring new cultures and visiting places that are completely different from my home. I moved across the country for college, and I studied abroad. I think seeing and experiencing the world is one of the most fascinating parts of being on this planet.

What motivates you most?
I like doing things. If I don’t feel like I accomplished something in a day, even if it’s something small, I’m not the happiest. I will never spend a day on the couch.

How do you manage your work-life balance?
I’m very organized. I use a calendar that syncs to my phone and computer. I use notes on my phone too to keep lists of what I need to remember or accomplish. It might drive some people crazy, but planning is the best way I can manage my life!

What is your favorite meal?
Too hard to choose! It used to be sushi. Then it switched to this one vegan burger my mom and I loved, but the restaurant changed their menu and doesn’t make it the same way anymore. I can never go wrong with a really good pizza (plus I’m half Italian, so if I were to treat myself I’d probably choose that).

If you weren’t doing the job you have now, what would you be doing?
I used to think I’d like to teach. But I just started teaching journalism at USC, so I guess that doesn’t count anymore! Maybe I would be a physical therapist.

What is something on your bucket list?
I really want to publish a children’s book. I’ve had an idea on my mind for years, and I’d love to one day publish it.

What are your biggest passions?
My family and friends, telling people’s stories, exploring the outdoors — and puppies!
