What's the Best Advice You've Ever Received?
With Nikki Moon
Introduce yourself! Who are you?
I’m Nikki Moon! I’m an artist from Long Island, NY and currently based in the D(M)V area. I love creating what I like to call “afro-celestial” artwork that showcases the beauty of people of color but always with an astral/spiritual twist. Some of my other interests include cooking, gardening, and playing the guitar. I am usually pretty shy in person but my personality and thoughts definitely come out through my artwork! Most people know me by my social media handle, which is @HeySheDraws on both Instagram and Twitter.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
“Follow your heart.” This is advice that sounds super cliche, but it’s something that I’ve heard from so many different sources all my life. For years I would shrug this phrase off as a simple positive proverb meant to give hope and not actually make a difference… but recently I’ve learned that when I actually step back, drop all outside influences, and follow my inner voice, most of my doubts/worries are transformed into lessons and lots of success!
What message do you think every woman should hear?
“You are beautiful inside and out….BUT FOR REAL!” Another one that sounds totally cliche, but in my experience, it’s another one of those surfacey phrases that people don’t actually take seriously as much as they should! I personally know many people (myself included at one point) that would shout from mountaintops to hype another woman up, yet won’t do the same for themselves due to low self-esteem. I think every woman (and little girl) should remind themselves of their beauty and their power every single day! Even if you don’t believe that you are beautiful or powerful, telling yourself you are is the first step toward true self love.
What is your favorite thing about where you live?
My backyard for sure! It’s full of really thick trees and forest creatures. My favorite time of year is during the whole month of July because the fireflies look like glitter in the trees at night. It’s an awesome spot for meditation, but also just for getting peace and quiet in general. Definitely one of my happy places!
What do you love most about yourself?
I really love my creativity because I truly can’t imagine living life without that part of me. The whole process of creation is so satisfying to me. Most of my time is actually spent trying to organize/execute the 10 million project ideas I get on a daily basis, and while that can feel chaotic at times, it’s what I live for.
What is your favorite meal?
Definitely a tie between anything curried and pizza with fries!
What do you do on a daily basis to grow and move forward?
Express gratitude, meditate, and make something. If I do those three things everyday, then it has been a good day! Bonus points if I catch up on reading!
What is one thing people would be surprised to hear about you?
That I’m actually a really REALLY loud person. I’m so shy and timid in public and on social media, but when I’m in my zone, I’m usually singing, dancing (badly), cracking corny jokes, and just being a fool in general.
If you weren’t doing the job you have now, what would you be doing?
Teaching! I have a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and was a teacher prior to pursuing art full-time.
What is something on your bucket list?
I really want to become a polyglot (someone who speaks many languages). I also really want to buy some land in Barbados, tour Africa, and visit Thailand/Brazil at least once.
Where do you find inspiration?
I’m highly influenced by color, so sometimes a whole painting will exist because I saw a certain color combo in a sunset one day. Nature in general though, as well as music, are also really big inspirations for me. Sometimes a song portrays a situation so beautifully that it inspires me to do the same through visual art. Other artists are another big inspo! So much so that my friend Dina Baez and I actually founded a creative collective called HeyWeCollab which focuses on all of the good that happens when artists put collaboration above competition!
What are your biggest passions?
I am extremely passionate about art obviously, but also taking care of others and helping others takes up a HUGE part of my heart.
