Introduce yourself! Who are you?
Hola! I’m Natasha Barrera, I am 26 year old Latina Entrepreneur and I’m the Co-Owner of Ravishing Party Rentals & Wanderlust Cocktail Co. I live and work in Orange County, California in the Event Production Industry. I am a very goofy person who loves black coffee, naps and my dog Lola!
What is one thing no one really knows about you?
That I am a hopeless romantic, I still believe in true love and in big romantic gestures because I don’t think business is everything, you need a personal life and someone to share your success with.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. This stuck with me because at the end of the day we are the ones responsible for our results. If you are not happy with your job but you aren’t looking for a new one, planning a business of your own or planning on going back to school, etc. then guess what... you are still going to be unhappy tomorrow and the next day and next until you change your actions.
What would you say to 16 year old you?
Save babe. Just save, minimum 10% every time you get a check. Those savings can help fund a future business without having to get an investor or struggle for a loan.
Have you ever had anyone doubt you? How did that make you feel?
Yep. When I was first going into business for myself someone once said that it wouldn’t work and that it wouldn’t bring me success. Hearing negativity is never easy and when I was told that I wouldn’t succeed I actually didn’t speak up and I couldn’t tell what felt worse, to hear that negativity or not finding the power to defend myself.
I do not regret that experience though, because of that moment I learned how to embrace the haters to use it as one of my fuels and I promised myself from that moment on I would always speak up and defend myself.
What message do you think every woman should hear?
If you don’t become clear about what you want then you are setting yourself up for failure. Write down what you want and when its time to ask for it. SPEAK UP. Men have no problem asking for what they want so why do us women hesitate? Because we will look like divas? Because we will be too demanding? At the end of the day so what!? Those definitions of diva and too demanding don’t pay the bills so instead of fearing a label why don’t we just ASK FOR WHAT WE WANT?
What is your favorite thing about where you live?
THE O.C, Its so funny because growing up I would say I couldn’t wait to leave this town but then as I got older I just realized how amazing it is to grow up here. We have an amazing community with so much to do and with so much to offer! Orange County really is a place to not only live but to visit, come down to watch our Angels or Ducks play, experience the amazing restaurants and incredible bars, I truly do believe the bar scene here is only getting better and if you do come down you have to visit Downtown Santa Ana!
What do you love most about yourself?
I love my attitude and mind. Mostly because it has taken me a few years to become someone positive, at 18 I was a negative girl who doubted myself and doubted I would ever reach any version of success. I feel like as I have gotten a little older and have experienced some rough roads that life has tested me and my mind. If an event has hiccups (which they always do) I can now think on my feet and get a job done without panicking and automatically going towards negative thoughts and emotions. I always tell myself and my partner the 3 words that I need to hear and say to get me through it and that is WE GOT THIS.
Do you remember a specific time you overcame adversity?
When I was 21 I went from having a home, full time job, new car to the next day not having any of those things. I had to learn how to be on my own and rely on myself to get through it because giving up was just not an option, I wasn’t raised to take the easy way out so I made mistakes as we all do but I learned from them and kept going and kept pushing myself out of my comfort zones in order to get to where I am now, and this isn’t even the finish line, I have so much more to go through and I have so many more life lessons to learn but I am thankful for what happened because I learned a very important thing which is that I’m tough and I can take care of myself.
What is the biggest thing you’ve learned along the way?
I have learned that its okay to not have all the answers, you have to acknowledge that you don’t know it all and be open to learning something new whether it be from someone new but with fresh ideas or someone wiser with more experience. What more important, your pride or your growth? That’s what I ask myself whenever I feel like I’m letting my Ego get to me.
Why do you love to travel?
Traveling at a young age definitely opened my eyes to more possibilities, I know for a fact that I will move away from Orange County soon and making that decision wasn’t hard for me because I feel like living in different places around the world will only make me a better human being. Some people live a full life and the 1 thing I hear the most from them was “I wish I traveled more”. I truly do believe you should experience all this world has to offer because there is SO MUCH.
What motivates you most?
My partner, Jessenia, She and I started these companies and she is truly the best partner I could have ever asked for. I’m not a one woman show and Jessenia is my perfect balance, we have each others back and we are risking it all whether the outcome be good or bad.
How do you manage your work-life balance?
I feel like its still a work in progress, I am still learning and that’s okay because life is constantly changing for me. I will say though that EVERYBODY needs to make time to do the things that make them happy. Whether its going to the gym, going to a movie, creating a new music playlist, Having a drink with your best friend, etc. You need to make that time for you and you only. That’s what has helped me lately to keep me happy.
What is your favorite meal?
PIZZA, PIZZA and PIZZA! It not a joke, I can eat pizza for breakfast lunch and dinner and not get tired of it. If someone brings a pizza around you will see me eyeing it.
What do you do on a daily basis to grow and move forward?
I listen, My partner and I bounce ideas off each other all day and whenever we finish an event we go over the positive and negative, we give each other constructive criticism and we listen to each others opinions. If you can't admit you are wrong then there is no room for growth.
