Introduce yourself! Who are you?
My name is Monica Abramov! Serial entrepreneur and co-founder of Lunata Beauty, a beauty tech company based in Toronto, Canada.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
When it comes to business, a “no” isn’t always a no. We’ve had so many situations with Lunata where we were first told no (by retailers, investors, etc) but those later turned to a yes with some perseverance!
What would you say to 16 year old you?
The stuff you’re stressing about now ain’t nothin, kid! Seriously though, I wish I could tell my 16 year old self not to take myself so seriously, or worry so much about what about people thought.
Have you ever had anyone doubt you? How did that make you feel?
Oh wow YES! In business, all the time. Honestly, I love it – just gives me an opportunity to prove them wrong.
Have you always had confidence in yourself?
Definitely not – it’s a constant work in progress. When I was younger, I really struggled with confidence. I feel the older I get, the more confident I get because I know my worth, and what I’m capable of.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned along the way?
I think the biggest lesson I’ve learned is that failure can be a good thing. I’ve failed many times, but it hasn’t stopped me from trying again. It’s tough when you fail publicly too – I’ve had to shut down two businesses so it’s tough to go back out there and tell the world you’re at it again – but you can’t let the fear of failure stop you from going after your passions.
What is the best part of running Lunata Beauty?
I love love love building something from nothing. Not just the brand, but the actual product development side of things is so rewarding. To have an idea for a product, then to see it materialize from a digital sketch to a rendering, to a functional prototype, and then to the finished product sold on shelves is an incredible feeling.
What motivates you most?
My kids – I want to build the best future for them possible and want them to be proud of their mama!
How do you manage your work-life balance?
It’s a struggle – especially in the early stages of a startup where you’re always “on”, and business hours are not 9-5. I get calls and emails from China during my evenings, so it’s certainly a challenge. But I try to manage the best I can and designate times to unplug and be present.
What is one thing people would be surprised to hear about you?
I’m afraid of elevators! To the point where I’ve had to walk up about 12 flights of stairs before a big retailer pitch. I’m getting better and forcing myself to work through it – but my claustrophobia takes over!
Did you always know what you wanted to do as a career?
Yeah, I’ve had entrepreneurship in my blood since I was a child – at the age of 5, I would paint pictures and sell them in the park for $0.50.
Were you scared to start the process?
Honestly, no. Every business I’ve had, I kind of dove right in. The fear came later!
