With Maria Velazquez
Introduce yourself! Who are you?
My Name is Maria Velazquez I was born in Cali Colombia 35 years ago , a beautiful city where salsa dancing plays a major role in everyone’s lives and happiness is felt from the very moment you arrive. I left Colombia when I was 16 years old and went to Miami to study Culinary Arts and Restaurant Management, then fell in love with Real Estate following in my mother’s footsteps. After 5 years of living in Miami, I moved to NY where I have lived for the past 15 years of my life fully in love with the city and my amazing job in Real Estate.
What is one thing no one really knows about you?
I love to cook and entertain, I am a cross between Betty Crocker and a housewife.

To really stick to what you believe in, and never take no for an answer.
What would you say to 16-year-old you?
Slow down and enjoy because you will be running around for the rest of your life…LOL
What is your greatest fear?
Losing my independence and not being able to manage my own time.
Have you ever had anyone doubt you? How did that make you feel?
Yes, a million times over. I’ve been doubted in this industry where everyone is so bloody competitive. It has made me stronger, accentuating my work ethic and has motivated me to always go the extra mile to be able to differentiate myself from others.
What message do you think every woman should hear?
Women are super heroes without capes, the simple fact of being able to be mothers, housewives, professionals and still make time for ourselves gives us the strength and capability to do anything we want. We should be very proud of ourselves and support each other.
What is it like to be a businesswoman?
It’s all about balance, persistence and motivation. It’s hard to survive as a professional independent business woman in NY but my ethics, values and experience make me want to wake up every morning and hustle.
What is your favorite thing about where you live?
Every day is different and every aspect of the city fascinates me and keeps me immensely curious.
What do you love most about yourself?
I am wisely stubborn so I don’t give up easily!

Yes, in 2008 when the Real Estate Market crashed and I had to reinvent myself and my business to continue to succeed.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned along the way?
To never give up or underestimate yourself no matter where you came from or how hard things get.
What motivates you most?
Big challenges, such as difficult clients.
How do you manage your work-life balance?
I try to take one day off a week for self-care and pampering.
What is your favorite meal?
It depends on the day or time of the year…I am in a weird time now where I love to eat everything. Lately I have been really into Greek food.
What do you do on a daily basis to grow and move forward?
I hit the gym every day at 7 am and meditate for 10 mins before taking a shower.
Do you have a mentor? If so, what did they teach you?
My Mother is my mentor. She has taught me persistence, how to stay motivated and effective problem solving.
