You've Got To Be Flexible

with Lauren Wilson-Policke

Introduce yourself! Who are you?
I’m Lauren Wilson-Policke, the Founder of LWP Public Relations, a PR, Marketing and Social Media Company based in Montclair, New Jersey specializing in building brand awareness for fashion and lifestyle clients. My company works with clients like Nicole Miller, Andiamo Luggage, Stowaway Collection and Salt + Umber. I love having the opportunity to work with both national and local clients to help them achieve their marketing goals. I’m a born and raised Jersey girl who loves traveling, fashion, pop culture, the beach and live music.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Make your passion your paycheck.

What would you say to 16 year old you?
Don’t sweat the small stuff. The biggest things now won’t matter in a few years. Just have fun and enjoy the ride.

What message do you think every woman should hear?
You are capable of ANYTHING.

What do you love most about yourself?
I love my drive and focus. When I set out to do something, I make it happen. It’s probably the Capricorn in me but when I set a goal, I do everything in my power to achieve it.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned along the way?
You’ve got to be flexible, willing and able to adapt to the ever changing landscape of your industry. Things you learned 10, even 5 years ago may not be applicable anymore – especially with the rise and importance of social and digital media. You have to read, learn and keep up with the trends so that you and your business can adapt and stay current. Challenging yourself in this way and constantly learning new approaches is what makes you successful.

What motivates you most?
My happiness.

How do you manage your work-life balance?
This can be really challenging when you own your own business because you often feel like you can’t shut off. I do my best to not check my emails in the evening and utilize that time to catch up with my husband and friends. I make time to travel (after all, it’s a major perk of being your own boss!) but balance this by getting up early to complete emails and pitches or stay up late to ensure everything on my to-do list is checked off. If I’m at the gym, I like to walk on the treadmill and respond to emails. I think it’s all about balance.

What do you do on a daily basis to grow and move forward?
I love listening to podcasts. I think it’s such an efficient way to learn something new or become inspired. I listen to them on my morning runs and always find a great takeaway from them. I’m really into entrepreneur focused podcasts because so much of the advice applies to me, my experience and business. Raising the Bar by Alli Webb, Super Women by Rebecca Minkoff and How I Built This with Guy Raz are all good ones.

Do you have a mentor? If so, what did they teach you?
I’m pretty lucky as I’ve had several personal and professional mentors along the way. My mom has always been a great mentor because she’s so encouraging, supportive and always pushed me to be the best version of myself.

Did you always know what you wanted to do as a career?
No, not always. I originally went to school to study elementary education. After I completed my freshman year, I realized it wasn’t for me. It wasn’t until I worked at my first internship for an accessories company and shadowed the PR Director, that I realized PR was what I really wanted to do.

If you weren’t doing the job you have now, what would you be doing?
I’ve always wanted to be an airplane stewardess because I have an odd obsession with planes and I’d like to travel the world.

What is something on your bucket list?
My bucket list of countries that I’d still like to visit is about a mile long. I also want to move to the USVI for a few years.

Where do you find inspiration?
I am always inspired by my travels. The people, the fashion, the culture, the food – everything. Traveling is really important to me because I always come back a better person than when I left. I’ve learned so much from visiting cities and experiencing new adventures. It recharges me and inspires me creatively.
