Who are you? Introduce yourself!
My name is Kyra, and I’m a public relations professional in Toronto, Canada. I studied at Lakehead University in Orillia, where I specialized in psychology and media. I recently completed my postgraduate certificate in Public Relations at Humber College in Toronto.
Growing up for myself, my weight and mental health was a constant struggle. At a young age, I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, and to this day, it’s a battle I fight every day. When it came to my weight, I was picked on, and this would follow me throughout my elementary and high school experiences.
When the body positivity movement took over within the past couple of years, it made me realize I can allow myself to accept my body for what it is. The book ‘You Are A Badass,’ gave me the confidence to start a social media platform which allowed me to voice my experiences with my mental health and body confidence journey. It was a time in my life where I look back on and know it was the epiphany I needed.
This was when I decided to change my Instagram into a safe place to talk about mental health and body positivity. I want everyone to feel like they are included, and anyone is welcome to join the conversation.
What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about all things female empowerment, body positivity and mental health. My why for being so excited about body positivity, mental health and female empowerment is something I’ve struggled with my entire life. This is why I curated @classickyra into what it is today. I’m not afraid to talk about my struggles, and if opening up about my battle can help or inspire one person, it makes everything I’m doing here worthwhile.
Why is it so important to empower women?
For centuries women have been told what to do. How to dress, how to speak, how to be the perfect partner. I’m here to remind women YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LISTEN TO THIS! Be who you want to be and be true to yourself. There is nothing more beautiful than a woman being who she truly is. We are all badass in our own way, and it’s important to remember that you don’t have to fall into a cookie-cutter mold. My mission is to remind women they can be whoever and whatever they want to be.
What message do you think every woman should hear?
Be true to yourself. Remember, no matter what risks you take, your real friends and family will always be there to support and lift you. Take chances. You will make mistakes along the way, but these mistakes will only help you to blossom into a beautiful and experienced woman.
