Design Your Own Life

Kristina McInnis

Introduce yourself! Who are you?
I am Kristina McInnis, but you can call me Kristy. I am a fashion and lifestyle blogger turned podcaster this last year. I love cheese and a good rom com movie! This past year I started and ended a business then started another one called KCMCONNECT.

Did you always know what you wanted to do as a career?
Honestly I wanted to become a vet! Crazy right? I have always wanted to help animals and started to volunteer at my local vet clinic in 7th grade. I helped in a mini procedure where we docked tails and ears on dogs. I actually threw up from the smell of blood and my days of wanting to be a vet were over.

Someone one day asked me why I had never pursued fashion and somehow we came upon the topic of being a blogger. Shortly after I looked around my high school for a graphic designer to help me create my first blog, everythingfashion33.

Were you scared to start the process?
10000000000% I think if you are not scared to start something, then something is off! You should be nervous. Stepping out after your passion is scary, but also badass. It takes courage to go after what you want.

What is one thing no one really knows about you?
I think people do not know I actually have a sense of humor and I am pretty down to earth, even though on Instagram I post a lot of pink.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
I think the best thing I have ever been told is that you are the designer of your own life. I love to think of myself as a creator. Everyday I build a picture, paint a different line, and am able to create whatever the hell I like. I like to live by my own rules and sometimes that is hard. It is hard to not live traditionally or have a traditional job.

What would you say to 16 year old you?
Step back and take it all in. I honestly wish I would have lived more in the moment and embraced the years of being young. It took a lot of my teens to lead me to where I am now! I would have hugged that 16 year old version of me.

Have you ever had anyone doubt you? How did that make you feel?
So many people. I remember when someone has something negative to say or has doubts, that it has more to do with them than it does me. At first when I used to hear people say negative things I was consumed by it. I then took the time to see they were most likely the problem. I had to look for confidence and reassurance in myself, not in others opinions.

What message do you think every woman should hear?
You don’t have to be a millionaire or a size two to live a happy and healthy life. You just need the proper tools to do so. Seek those things you are struggling with and surround yourself with people who are experts in their field.

Have you always had confidence in yourself?
Remembering I am much more than my looks. I am much more than a number on a scale. I am much more than likes, comments, or brand deals. I try to focus on things other than my looks to compliment myself on. I am trying a new thing to give myself daily affirmations that are not appearance based.

What do you love most about yourself?
That no matter how hard I fail or fall I remain optimistic about my life and future.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned along the way?
To be productive. You can work, but what are you working towards? I have seen that time blocking and setting a list of things I need to do is essential for my productivity.
