Who are you? What do you do for a living?
My name is Keri Petersen and I am the owner and lead designer at KP Spaces. My focus is on creating beautiful spaces for my clients that reflect who they are and what they care about. I believe that we are enormously impacted by our physical surroundings and I am passionate about using the transformative power of design to change people’s lives.
Why did you start your business? What positive things do your customers say about you?
I started my business as a way to express myself creatively, and honestly, it has been one of the greatest adventures of my life! I love being able to create my own schedule as well as take on the projects that I’m truly passionate about. My clients always tell me that they appreciate my positive outlook. I really have so much fun at work and that definitely comes through. My years of experience in this industry have also rendered me an expert in my field and I think my clients would also say they appreciate the knowledge base that I bring to each and every project.
How has Seattle supported you as a woman in this community?
I feel very fortunate to have a network of women in this city that I can call on for advice and support. Entrepreneurship can be lonely and confusing at times and Seattle has a wealth of resources for women business owners who are navigating through it all. Many of my clients are women business owners as well and it feels so great to be able to support them as they pursue their dreams.
What makes Seattle a special place for women, and why have you chosen Seattle to open/start your business?
There are so many opportunities for women in Seattle, from the tech industry to healthcare to philanthropy. Many young women come here for an education and stay because of our thriving job market. I have lived in the Northwest my entire life and can’t think of a more fantastic place to run my business. Seattle’s beauty is unparalleled and offers so much inspiration for me creatively. Most days I really feel like I’m living my dream life!!
Seattle has the highest share of women-owned businesses in the country – why do you think that is?
I think Seattle places a high value on the things that women really care about. It’s created a culture where women owned businesses are essential to our city’s success. Women rally for each other here and we make it a priority to promote community over competition.
