We All Have a Purpose in This Life
by Kaylene Langford
Introduce yourself! Who are you?
Hi! My name is Kaylene, I am the founder of StartUp Creative, a print publication and online platform that showcases creative entrepreneurs and their startup stories. I just recently turned 30, I live in Melbourne Australia. My favorite pastimes include a hot, black coffee in the sunshine, a cheese platter paired with a natural wine in the park with a fun and slightly competitive game of Finska and slow Sunday mornings with my girlfriend in the garden.
I spend my days business coaching creatives who want to turn their passion into a viable business. I run workshops, speak at events, host a podcast and do all I can to educate, inspire and grow more people to design the life of their dreams by turning their passion into a successful business.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Just start. The timing will never be right, and the conditions never easy! Jump in, give it a crack and figure it out as you go.
What would you say to 16 year old you?
Entrepreneurship is a real thing and you should be one, you’re a horrible employee – go work for yourself!
Have you ever had anyone doubt you? How did that make you feel?
Yes, plenty of people have! When I first started my business I had someone tell me to forget the idea and come work for them and their business which was very similar to the vision I had for StartUp Creative.
In the early stages I was seeking a lot of guidance and mentorship and came across a few business men who told me to get back to them when I had a business plan and also said that the idea wasn’t viable.
Then I had 2 investors approach me to invest in the company and during the negotiation stages of the terms and conditions they pulled the pin and told me ‘I wasn’t the right person for StartUp Creative’ and I would never make anything of it.
MMmm how did it make me feel? I’ve always been a little sensitive so initially it cuts deep and I feel the deep pang in my heart that instantly makes me want to cry. It only ever lasts a few hours, a day at most and then I find myself scheming a way to prove them wrong. I am lucky that I have a very determined and somewhat competitive side to me that doesn’t like to lose.
What is your favorite thing about where you live?
I love the creative vibe in Melbourne. This place is pulsing with passionate creatives who are striving to make their dreams a reality! The whole city is in support of the creative aspect of this place, including council, businesses and the laws!
It also has an array of rooftop bars, beautiful city parks, a crisp morning breeze, impeccable coffee and glorious sunsets.
What do you love most about yourself?
I’m a pretty optimistic person. I aim to see the good in everyone and find the best outcome for any situation that life throws at me! My friends call me a ‘doer’ – I can’t see something that needs to be done and not do it haha it’s certainly a good quality to have when starting a business.
What motivates you most?
A good story! Be it a book, podcast, great conversation or told by a friend. I love hearing people’s stories of how they came to be where they are today. Humans are incredible and life is totally unpredictable but I totally believe we all have purpose in this life time and if we can listen to the subtle messages and guides of our heart and intuition then we can find an abundant flow in life that allows us to live from a place of ease and pure joy. When you’re in this state, life is happening for you not against you and you can be, do and experience your wildest dreams.
What do you do on a daily basis to grow and move forward?
Meditation is my go to source for growth in life. I’ve spent the last two years studying Joe Dispenzia’s work and 100% believe that my meditation mat, first thing in the morning is the most sacred place in this world. No matter what life throws at me, I know that the quickest way to find a solution through a problem, come back to myself or manifest my wildest dreams is through my subscious mind and daily meditation practice. I cannot recommend it enough. We should all be mediating at least 1 hour a day! It’s truly life changing!
What is the best thing about being a founder of a company?
Everyday I get to wake up and design my dream life! I’ve been in business for almost 5 years now and I am so grateful that it provides me with the freedom to live my days doing what I love. Really early on I decided that I wasn’t going to be one of those founders who worked 20 hours a day and lived off two minute noodles. I came from the corporate rat race and wasn’t prepared to sacrifice my quality of life for a career. Who says you can’t have it all? I love that I can take time off to be with my family or help my lover or friends out with their businesses and most importantly do the things that make me feel alive and happy. From this place I am a better founder, business coach and person!
What is something on your bucket list?
I want to learn to fly a plane!
