What is the Biggest Thing You've Learned Along the Way?
With Kami Blease
Introduce yourself! Who are you?
Hi, my name is Kami Blease! I’m an Austin-based personal trainer, body image & wellness coach! My purpose in life is to help women create healthy lives from a healthy place. I am married to my college sweetheart and best friend TJ and we have two kitties that we basically treat like our kids, Catniss and Hobbes. I love watching all the shows on Netflix, girls night, morning walks, quiet time, red wine (actually all wine), traveling, cooking, yoga, and of course my cats…seriously I’m obsessed.
What is one thing no one really knows about you?
I walk around my house giving speeches. You know how people sing in the shower or car? I don’t really do that. I give pretend speeches, practicing for the day I get to do it for real. It’s probably a little odd but I love what I do and I love talking about it. My cats always seem really impressed too so obviously I’m nailing it haha
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Be who you are, say what you feel, because those you matter won’t mind and those who mind won’t matter. –Dr. Seuss
It’s hard to be yourself in a world that constantly encourages you to confirm to their ideals, but allowing myself the space to be who I am, care about the things I care about, and pursue my dreams, has shown me that the above advice could not be truer. You will never please everyone so focus on the people whose opinion really matters and make sure you like who you see in the mirror. Don’t try to become only what others need or want because you’ll end up losing yourself and making no one happy.
What would you say to 16 year old you?
I did an Instagram post about this a couple months ago because it was my 10-year HS reunion and I was feeling nostalgic. So I’ll sum up what I said there:
1. This is not all there is. Who you are here, what you feel about yourself, and the things that people say here will not define you the rest of your life. Stop trying so hard to be cool and focus on being kind.
2. Your value and worth is not defined by your relationship status. Enjoy being single, it doesn’t mean anything is wrong with you, it means there is something better for you ahead. Invest in your girlfriends and cherish this season with them.
3. It really does get better. No homework, bullies, classes, cliques, or drama. As an adult you get to say no to a lot of things because babe, you don’t have time for that ish. We have way more important things to focus on than small-minded people and small-minded games.
4. People will be mean and it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with what’s going on inside them. Try not to let it sink in too much.
5. You are amazing. You are enough. You are loved. The world is waiting for you so don’t be so afraid to step out and change it. There is room for you, room for your dreams and passions and a place for you at the table.
Have you ever had anyone doubt you? How did that make you feel?
Yes. Now whether they said it to my face might be a different story! I’ve definitely had people share their concerns with what I’m doing but honestly there haven’t many too many haters ; I am truly blessed to be surrounded by so many encouraging and supportive people.
When people doubt me, it gives me an opportunity to prove them wrong. It gives me a chance to show them a different way to think, live, dream and pursue life. Who knows how seeing my journey, with all itt’s ups and downs, might affect them? You never know the impact you are making in people’s lives around you. If you feel called to pursue something, then follow that; it is uniquely yours to pursue and you should lean in to that. Try and find people who will support you, even if it’s just one person. Having someone who can pick you up in your darkest moments and say it’s going to be okay is crucial for any person trying to follow their dreams.
I don’t need others to doubt me, I’ve doubted myself enough times. It’s scary to put yourself out there, to be vulnerable, to potentially fail and fail big. But for every doubt there are typically 100 reasons to keep going. Focus on those.
What message do you think every woman should hear?
You are enough.
So often we are judged by how we look or what we’ve done with our lives and it’s important to realize that no matter how it shakes out, we are still enough. You are still deserving of love, respect and kindness. You are still worthy of your dreams and worthy of the space you take up however you choose to occupy it.
What is your favorite thing about where you live?
Well, I am originally from Austin and I am so happy that I recently moved back! I love how active the city is, how friendly everyone is, and how easy it is to get good vegan and vegetarian food here! No one questions you or thinks you’re weird haha. Also, my parents and some friends are still here so it is wonderful to get to see them so much more often!
What do you love most about yourself?
My positive attitude. I love how often I am able to see the good, stay hopeful, find the joy, and believe the best. I am truly blessed and so thankful for my life and I really try to appreciate how lucky I am as often as possible. Not everything in life will go (or has gone) as planned but always trying to see the best has made it a much more enjoyable journey.
What motivates you most?
Knowing I was created with a purpose. We are all called to do and be different things and I feel lucky to be called to encourage and empower women. I try to remind myself that if even one woman feels positively affected and changed by what I share and create, then I have done enough. I want to impact many though, which is what keeps me going! Life is so beautiful, but it’s more beautiful when you are at peace with your body and yourself.
What do you do on a daily basis to grow and move forward?
I listen to podcasts and/or read almost every day. This helps me not only grow as a person but infuses the things I teach with my programs, writing, and coaching. I am constantly evolving and growing as a person and I want to make sure I am doing so in the best ways possible. Its not always easy but loving myself through the process has made it better. I am happy with who I am and I know I can continue to improve and be better, but that doesn’t mean I am not already enough.
What is something on your bucket list?
I have a couple things for sure on my bucket list! I would love to give a Ted talk someday, host my own magical tropical wellness retreat, possibly live abroad (even if for just a few months), and get another tattoo.
What is the biggest thing you’ve learned along the way?
Everyone’s journey is different. I think sometimes in this age of social media we believe that success can happen over night and working for yourself is all about traveling, eating, and glamour. The reality of course is that it’s not and, though that might be what it looks like, there is a lot of hard work and grit behind that image of success. I’ve struggled with comparing myself to others, especially when it comes to other’s perceived professional success. I’ve had to take a step back and realize that I don’t want anyone else’s path, I want the one set out for me. I find rest knowing that the timing will be perfect, even if I don’t fully understand it. We need to celebrate each other’s successes and build up those around us who are following their dreams and their path. It can be a lonely and hard journey but when you feel called to do this there’s no other option, so you might as well make the most of it!
If you weren’t doing the job you have now, what would you be doing?
Something with animals. One day I would love to start an animal rescue and sanctuary (it’s actually a dream I’ve had since 5th grade) for cats, dogs and maybe other animals too haha I’m open! I love animals and feel so much peace and calmness around them so I would love to create a safe place for animals in need someday!
What are your biggest passions?
Obviously I am very passionate about the message I share, encouraging and empowering women to love themselves now and create beautiful lives from a place of “enough”. My faith is the foundation for all that I do and I would not be where I am today if I did not have that. In the hardest of times, knowing that I am loved and called, keeps me hopeful and moving forward. My husband and I are always on the go so we keep a pretty full schedule! Whether it’s hosting friends, retreating to some water, or catching a standup act, Austin has offered plenty of things to keep us busy. I am always inspired after meeting new people or having a new experience.
Why do you love to travel?
Oh gosh, so many reasons! I mean it’s just good for the soul! Even if it’s a trip a few hours away from your home, it’s nice to just get out and do something different. I have been blessed enough to travel consistently and want to continue doing so. I think travelling gives you perspective. It is humbling to see other cultures and meet people of all backgrounds. It’s easy to stay in your bubble but traveling gives us a chance to see and grow, while realizing how similar we all truly are. There is huge world out there that is very different from the one we live in and it’s incredible to get to experience it (even if just for a few days). I am my best self when I’m traveling with people I love and I think it’s so good for our relationships too!
