Introduce yourself! Who are you?
I’m Julia and first and foremost I’m a mama to Amalia, my 19 month old daughter. I live with her, my husband, Anel, and our dog, Boots, in Stamford, Connecticut. My family is everything to me, but I also love what I do! I write a lifestyle blog called Lemon Stripes where I share outfits, weeknight meals, beauty tips, lessons in motherhood, and more.
Why did you start your company?
I started my blog, Lemon Stripes, in 2010 to share healthy recipes and fashion tips with my friends and family. I never in a million years thought that anyone else would read it. The fact that I can run it as a full time job and make my income through it today still baffles me. It’s been such a crazy journey, and I absolutely love what I do!
Have you ever had anyone doubt you? How did that make you feel?
Who hasn’t? My friends and family used to literally make fun of me for being a blogger. They would laugh and joke when I went to photo shoots, but then I started growing and growing and they stopped laughing and started really respecting what I did. The doubt just fueled me to work harder and prove them wrong!
What would you say to 16 year old you?
Don’t worry so much about what other people think. Stay strong and be true to yourself. I promise, that will make you happier than trying to fit in!
What do you love most about yourself?
I’ve always struggled with self-love but when I became a mother, that changed. I started to see myself in my daughter’s eyes and I’m now so proud of the mom I am today. There are a lot of things that I’m still working through, but I know I’m a good mom and I love that about myself.
How do you manage your work-life balance?
It’s hard because as a blogger you’re expected to share pieces of your life 24/7. When I’m with my daughter, Amalia, I try to put down my phone and be present as much as possible. I also time block during the day so that at night I can be with my family without working. The key to work-life balance when working for yourself is schedules and regimens!
What is one thing no one really knows about you?
I’m a pretty open book on my blog, but the things I keep private are private for a reason. That said, I recently shared my decision to go on medication for anxiety, and was so surprised by outpouring of support. Anxiety is a constant battle for me, and it was nice to know that I’m not the only one.
What is your favorite meal?
My dad’s lasagna. I used to ask for it on my birthday every year growing up. He makes it with the usual layers plus pesto, ricotta, and some other secret ingredients. It’s the best!
What is your greatest fear?
I’m 33 years old and terrified of the dark. How embarrassing!
What is your favorite thing about where you live?
I live in Connecticut by the coast, and I love being near the beach. The winters are brutal but there’s nothing like a New England summer!
