We Are Always a Work in Progress

Gilda Joelle Osborn

Introduce yourself! Who are you?
Hi! I’m Gilda, and I’m from Alabama. I’m a full time model based in NYC. I’m a major foodie (with an even bigger sweet tooth)! I love to travel, workout, and cook!

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Never put the key to your happiness in someone else’s pocket.

What message do you think every woman should hear?
Every woman should hear my favorite quote by Diane von Furstenberg. “You know who’s gonna give you everything? Yourself.”

Do you remember a specific time you overcame adversity?
My father and grandmother passed away within months of one another when I was three years old. I struggled with grief and anxiety for several years. I still struggle with anxiety from enduring loss at a young age. It’s something I always have to keep in check, but I have come a long way!

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned along the way?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to not let other people’s opinions become your reality.

What would you say to 16 year old you?
I would tell her to ignore mean girls and to not let their words get to your head. I would tell her that she’s going to do exactly what she’s set out to do and to not worry about the future.

What do you love most about yourself?
I love that I’m kind to everyone I come in contact with.

Did you always know what you wanted to do in life (career, passions, hobbies, etc)?
Nope! I changed my major several times throughout undergrad, and I realized halfway through my master’s program that I didn’t want to use my degree. Now I’m a full time model!

Have you ever had anyone doubt you? How did that make you feel?
I’m sure I have, but no one has ever spoken words of doubt to my face. It’s inevitable that others will have something to say about you, whether it’s positive or negative. You can’t let it get to your head.

Have you always had confidence in yourself?
Nope! I hated making eye contact with others and was quite shy up until college.

What do you do on a daily basis to grow and move forward?
I find that practicing patience on a daily basis is the best way to grow and move forward.

What gets you up in the morning?
I love waking up early! The best way for me to do that is to schedule a workout the night before.

Is there anyone that helps keep you motivated throughout your journey?
My mom and my boyfriend, Adam

What cheers you up?
A great meal.

Do you have anyone you go to for advice?
My mom!

Are you still learning who you are?
Of course. I look back at each year and think about how much I have grown and changed. We are always a work in progress.

Glass half empty or glass half full?
Glass half full

Who is someone you admire? Tell us about them!
My mother. I was raised by a single mom, and I’m an only child, so we are very close. She is kind and fiercely independent. She shaped me into who I am today.

What are you most proud of?
I’m proud that I decided to take a risk and move to a city where I didn’t know anyone to pursue my dream of becoming a model.

What is your best childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memories revolve around the camp I went to many summers, Riverview Camp for Girls. Such easy times! The biggest decision I had to make was what camp activities I wanted to sign up for. I made some lifelong friends and memories through those summers!

If you had a chance for a “do-over” in life, what would you do differently?
I wouldn’t do anything differently. I think I’m a good example of things happening for a reason, of one thing leading to another

What are you most afraid of?
Losing those closest to me.

What was your most embarrassing moment?
I played the piano growing up, and I also participated in a few pageants. I was my sorority’s representative for Miss Greek Week, and during the talent portion, I got so nervous that I completely forgot how to play with my left hand. It was pretty embarrassing freezing on stage in front of probably a thousand people!
