Introduce yourself! Who are you?
Hi! I’m Chanèle, a passionate entrepreneur based in Toronto, Canada. I empower millennial women to succeed in style. The Do Well Dress Well website serves as a go-to resource for all things personal branding, career advice, networking, entrepreneurship and personal style. I’m also the Founder of ideate networking, an intimate event series for women living west of the downtown Toronto core – this allows me to connect with women on a more personal level while providing a space for them to develop new ideas and foster valuable connections with other like-minded women.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
You’re no good to anyone if you’re sick or dead. I started Do Well Dress Well as a side-hustle and I quickly became so passionate about it that I would put my all in to it. When I wasn’t at work, I was with my laptop writing posts, creating content and working on events. Eventually, I became really, really tired and burnt out. I was simply exhausted but for a long time, I ignored that. I didn’t take enough breaks, I wasn’t sleeping enough and I definitely wasn’t eating very well. My best friend reminded me that I can’t be my best self if I don’t take care of my self and that was a much-needed wake up call. As much as I was committed to being successful, I needed to put that same amount of effort into taking care of myself.
What message do you think every woman should hear?
This section of a quote by Marianne Williamson: “…It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” Sometimes we hold back from doing what we want to do because we don’t want others to feel inadequate. It’s exactly why women are less likely to self-promote than men. We feel uncomfortable with letting other people know how amazing we are. We’re shy to voice our opinions and share our expertise. But, if there’s one thing I’ve learned through my journey, it’s that some people are chosen to be “lightkeepers”. In other words, some of us are given the immense responsibility of shining our light first and as we shine this light, we encourage people to light up theirs. If you’re feeling nervous about going after your passion, just remember that someone out there is waiting for your light in order to find theirs. It could be your words, your work or your voice that empowers them. Everything that you do and put into the world is bigger than yourself.
What do you love most about yourself?
I love my friendly demeanor. I’m always the person that strangers feel comfortable enough to open up to. I can rarely go out without someone feeling compelled to share a compliment with me, tell me about their day or something personal about themselves. I think it’s definitely something that has contributed to my achievements so far – I always want people to feel as though they can approach me. Friendliness is a trait that I have also deliberately incorporated into my businesses not only though colour choice (yellow is a brand colour) but in the way that I choose to write content. My posts are always in first-person and I try to be as vulnerable as possible because I want every DWDW reader to feel as though we’re friends.
What motivates you most?
I aspire each day to add value by creating the best possible content and event experiences for women so they can succeed in style. I also strive to inspire women to be confident in their uniqueness and leverage what makes them remarkable in order to be the best versions of themselves, personally and professionally. This is what motivates me each and every day.
What do you do on a daily basis to grow and move forward?
I read a lot. Whether it’s a book or an article, I find that every time I read something I’m able to take away something that I can apply to myself or my business in order to move closer to my goals.
What is something on your bucket list?
I would love to spend some time traveling throughout California so I can visit San Francisco, San Diego and Palm Springs. The Saguaro Hotel in Palm Springs is honestly my dream hotel to stay at – so much colour everywhere!
What are your biggest passions?
I’m passionate about empowering women to empower women. This is what drives me and encourages me to get out of bed everyday. I’ve also become passionate about telling authentic stories about entrepreneurship and encouraging women to uncover their unique personal style through colour and accessories.
