Trust My Intuition

with Carmen Huter

Introduce yourself! Who are you?
My name is Carmen Huter. I am 25 years young and work as a travel and adventure photographer. I was born and raised in a sleepy town in the Austrian Alps and have called New Zealand home for the last few years.

What is one thing no one really knows about you?
Oh, there’s lots. 😉
Hmm, let’s see.
I love being at home. Yes, adventure runs deep in my blood, and I apparently can’t keep still for too long, but I feel the happiest at home with my fiance and friends, cooking dinner, watching a beautiful sunset and really just focusing on the ‘small’ things that are not that small after all. It keeps my mind and body healthy and happy, and I couldn’t do all the exploring and crazy hours without it.
Another thing many seem not to be aware of is that my last name is Huter, not Hunter. It’s so prevalent that I actually bought the rights for recently and judging by the inflow of emails, I have missed out on a heap of work haha.
Oh and finally, many don’t know that I only discovered my inner creative less than a handful of years ago. My favourite subject in school was Math, and I studied Management. Oh, how things have changed. 🙂

Have you ever had anyone doubt you? How did that make you feel?
The question really should be ‘have you ever had anyone not doubt you?’. This should give an indication of what I encountered on both personal and professional levels. It made me feel defeated, sure, but it also made me fight for my dreams even harder. Ultimately, it taught me to trust my intuition.

Do you remember a specific time you overcame adversity?
Due to the circumstances my family found themselves in, I left home and lived on my own aged 15. Back then, it didn’t seem like a huge deal. Now, I feel lucky it worked out and am proud I stuck to my path.

What is the biggest thing you’ve learned along the way?
That change is the only constant and love really is all that matters at the end of the day.
*I’m referring to self-love and giving love and kindness to others

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
To love and to be loved is the greatest luck on earth.

Looking back, what would you say to 16 years old you?
You are enough, and you are so much stronger than you think.

What do you do daily to grow and move forward?
Wake up with an open heart and spend some time outside (that might be a few minutes in my garden or an entire day hiking).

What message do you think every woman should hear?
You are enough. You are loved. You are strong.

What do you love most about yourself?
My relentless drive. It can drive others crazy, but it’s the one thing I know I can always count on when everything else seems uncertain; which, mind you, is most of the time.

Why do you love to travel?
Because it feeds my curiosity. It also endlessly inspires my character, creativity and community.

Have you ever had an extraordinary experience? Describe it!
I am so fortunate and privileged to have had plenty of extraordinary experiences. Each one of my travels, special moments with loved ones or just a surprisingly lovely conversation with a stranger – those are all pretty extraordinary to me.

What is something on your bucket list?
Greenland, Tahiti and Namibia.

What is one thing people would be surprised to hear about you?
I hope this isn’t a surprise, but I am just as flawed, anxious and excited as the rest of you.
Oh, and I have an abnormal obsession with tahini. Lifechanging facts, I know.

Where do you find inspiration?

What are your biggest passions?
Photography, my loved ones, environmentalism, travel, my job in general, great food, ethically made fashion, Harry Potter, books, movies, documentaries – where do I start and where do I stop?
