What Message Do You Think Every Woman Should Hear ?
With Meghan Santana
Introduce yourself! Who are you?
Hi my name is Meghan Santana! I am the owner of two companies based in Dover, DE I’m a full-time wedding photographer and run an online clothing company, Chicka & Co. I am 21 and decided to leave college to pursue my passions. I love being my own boss, my 5 cats and a venti coffee from Starbucks daily. The word “impossible” isn’t in my vocabulary.
Who would you say is your #1 inspiration?
My number one inspiration would definitely have to be Rachel Hollis, she is an amazing author of “Girl Wash Your Face.” She is just everything I strive to be.
What is one thing no one really knows about you?
I am an open book so it’s really hard to think of something someone doesn’t know about me. But I don’t talk about my past at all. My family went through a lot of stuff when I was in middle school, we had to move multiple times, I went to 3 high schools in one year, not fun haha. I got into a very good art college that only accepted 100 people but turned it down. Then while in my second major change at a technical college I decided to leave. I truly believe your childhood defines you, I am so social because of how much we moved around in those few years, which benefitted me in the long run!
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Hands-down the best advice I’ve ever gotten is if it’s not a hell yes, it’s a no. I don’t even have to explain it right? Don’t do stuff you hate.
What would you say to 16 year old you?
If I got to talk to my 16-year-old self, I would tell her to all the people to not even bother with, and to try a little harder in class. Other than that, I think she did a pretty good job making the best of high school!
What’s your dream job?
I don’t believe in telling people your big goals, but there is a lot more instore for Chicka!
Have you ever had anyone doubt you? How did that make you feel?
I’ve been so blessed to have such a strong support system. If anyone doubts me, I think it’s just random haters on social media. But hey, a follower is a follower! They’re only helping the business.
What message do you think every woman should hear?
A message that I found important to me and I think to all women, would be that it’s totally OK to grow slow. I would rather grow as a person comfortably then try and rush to succeed just because other girls around me are “ahead” Which goes into the “saying no” I would rather make less and be 100% happy then be rich and hate my job.
What is your favorite thing about where you live?
My favorite thing about where I live, is it’s a small town. And the best thing about it is being able to build a really strong clientele. Everyone around here is very family-oriented. It makes running a bigger business easier because you have the support system. Literally on my street are 5+ boutiques and 2 in which let me hang out and ask any questions I have!
What do you love most about yourself?
My favorite thing about myself is not caring what anyone thinks. I’m not perfect and I do have the occasional meltdown. But, other’s opinion hasn’t really phased me much. I just do my own things and love on those who support it.
Do you remember a specific time you overcame adversity?
My family struggled with finances due to big companies just not treating my dad right. So, having to get the smaller school lunch for kids who can’t afford it or having smaller Christmas’s was always more of a norm and really made me appreciate when my company thrived and became my paycheck. I’m not a big spender. Every penny is a blessing!
What motivates you most?
My biggest motivator is seeing my competition do better than me. If everyone was equally where I am I wouldn’t be as motivated to do bigger and better things. Never hang out with people at the same level, surround yourself with people you want to be like.
What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?
Biggest achievement was creating the clothing company. Because I literally was a photographer since like birth and then I was like heyyyy I sell clothes now lol I had to really prove myself with that dream.
What do you do on a daily basis to grow and move forward?
I try and get great sleep, drink a lot of water…and coffee. But most importantly always make time for family and friends.
What is one thing people would be surprised to hear about you?
I still live at home haha
What is something on your bucket list?
Something on my bucket list would be to write a best-seller.
What are your biggest passions?
My biggest passion is entrepreneurship as a whole! Love creating products.
What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs?
Biggest advice to other entrepreneurs would be, If you don’t know where your money is coming in, or going out you are going to fail. Your finances are the most important thing in a successful company. And you can’t do it alone.
