Have You Ever Had Anyone Doubt You?

With Maggie Politi

Introduce yourself! Who are you?
Hi:) I’m Maggie Politi! I’m a comedy writer, singer, executive producer, actor, & voice over artist. I’m also a girl who wanted to create opportunities for myself & other women in NY. So I created a female film initiative called Ladies in Action alongside my co-creator Spiro Marcos. It’s an initiative where we produce 5 short films all written by, directed by, and starring women! It’s a creation produced by our non profit production company NikoFrank Productions.

What is one thing no one really knows about you?
Hmm. I’ve really started to enjoy my alone time! I used to crave being around other people all the time. But over the past year, I’ve learned to love hangin’ out by myself because I tend to be the most creative & flush out so many ideas that way. My grandfather always said, “be your own best friend”.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
My dad taught me all my life, to work hard, never give up, and to remember where I came from. In the last few years, I’ve created a lot of my own opportunities & I’m so proud of that. I’ve also made a point to be kind. If we aren’t nice to each other, than what’s the point? When Spiro & I started our company, it was so important to us to be gracious & kind to everyone we worked with. We’re both actors, so we wanted to create an atmosphere that was fun, creative, respectful & organized! As actors, we had both had negative experiences on other sets so it was essential to create an environment we knew people would appreciate!

What would you say to 16 year old you?
Besides“Girl, get yourself in a hair & make up class”  I’d probably say study harder. I wish I had gotten better grades in high school & was able to go to a better college. But back then, I was more concerned with boys & musical theatre. I didn’t always focus on what was really important. So I’d be like, “Maggie, do your homework”.

Have you ever had anyone doubt you? How did that make you feel?
Oh absolutely! My biggest advice: PROTECT YOUR ENERGY. If there are people in your life who are always negative, who feed into your insecurities instead of raise you up- distance yourself! Sometimes it’s co-workers, friends, or even family members. It’s important to keep the people close to you who believe in your dreams just as much as you do! But the other question here is- if you’ve ever made someone else feel that way? I’m sure at one point or another, we’ve all done it. Let’s support each other! I saw a quote the other day about how flowers instrinsicly bloom. They don’t look to the other flowers & hope they’re blooming brighter. They all just naturally bloom together. There’s room for all of us to bloom.

What message do you think every woman should hear?
You can do it! Find yourself a group of women that supports each other and create something! Also, it’s important to remmeber that’s there’s no exact timeline that things need to happen in. This is a tough one for me sometimes. Everyone has their own path, trust it.

What is your favorite thing about where you live?
NYC has it’s ups and downs, but the most magical thing about it is the opportunity! I love how with one email or phone call you could have a brand new opportunity on the horizon! It’s exciting:)
What do you love most about yourself?
I have a really big heart, which sometimes can get me into trouble. But, at the end of the day, I’m grateful that I care so much about my friends & family. I’m a proud Virgo, but acknowledge that sometimes Virgos can get themselves in trouble! We’re loyal to a fault!

What motivates you most?
I love hearing good news! When I hear a friend has booked a Broadway show, or got her record produced, or has a co-star on a major tv show, it inspires me! It makes me feel the power of these NYC moments. It effects my energy! Also, staying busy really keeps me motivated. When I have a really slow week, it’s much harder for me to stay active & creative. So I always appreciate a busy week! It’s when I do my best work.

What do you do on a daily basis to grow and move forward?
In my opinion, working on yourself is a constant job. It never ends. We’re all human, so we all have days when we’re feeling down & negative thoughts can start to creep in. But the thing about negativity, jealousy, & self doubt is, it never makes anything better. They are useless emotions! I tell myself, “Think the thoughts that serve you”. Will it serve me to compare myself to someone else? Will it serve me to judge where I’m at in my career? Changing your mind to think positively will work wonders in your life. Trust & believe.

Why did you start your company?
I started it as a way to create film opportunities for myself! I felt so frustrated waiting around for things to happen so I took matters into my own hand. The more recognition our little films received, the more I wanted to help other women do the same thing. The sad truth about the entertainment business is, women are often under appreciated. We wanted to create an initiative that lifts women up! Something that was a collaborative effort & could present work that we could all be proud of. We always try and hire as many women behind & in front of the camera as possible!

What is the best thing about being a founder of a company?
The best part is being able to make so many creative decisions! We get to decide who we want to work with, what scripts we take on & who to cast! That’s the most exciting part!

Do you have a mentor?
I had the extraordinary opportunity to work professionally with one of my mentors this year, Tony Award Winner Victoria Clark.  She won the Tony for her work in the musical, Light In The Piazza & she’s performed in countless Broadway shows. She directed one of the films for Ladies In Action called For Me & My Gal. What an experience! Spiro and I were in awe of her eye for detail, her musicianship, and creative vision for the film. Not only was it an incredible opportunity for us, it was such a beautiful gift to give our actors & writer the chance to work with a Broadway legend! The star of the film, Brittany Jeffery, was able to work with someone she had looked up to for years, and it was a joyous collaboration.

Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration in so many ways. A lot of times I’m inspired to write a comedic sketch just based on normal human interactions I experience. For instance, something funny happens in an elevator, or on the subway, etc. I’m also inspired by nature. I grew up in Lake Placid, NY so I’m an outdoors girl. I love hiking, skiing & yoga. Taking a hike can be such an inspirational experience! I’m also inspired every day by fiance, Michael. He moved to NY about a year ago, and within 4 months he was on Broadway living his dream. I’m inspired by his hard work & talent, but also how humble & kind he is to everyone he works with. He’s the real deal. Shout out to the love of my life!
