What Message Do You Think Every Woman Should Hear?

With Emily Elizabeth

Introduce yourself! Who are you?
Hello there! My name is Emily Elizabeth Duong and I am simply a very ambitious and passionate lifestyle guru, college student, and entrepreneur. I am currently a student at Chapman University and prior to college, I lived in a very small town in Pennsylvania. During this time, I was a competitive elite-level figure skater and USTA ranked tennis player and spent most of my days balancing my training between the two sports. Today, I continue to work on growing my business (Elite Skate Wear) and connecting with the skating community, while also staying involved as a figure skating coach and choreographer. On the other hand, I also enjoy blogging (www.emilyelizabeth.blog) about lifestyle, wellness, and mindset, in which I utilize to share my tips from my experience in all aspects of life.

Have you ever had anyone doubt you? How did that make you feel?
In all honesty, I have always felt doubted throughout my life, especially growing up. As the youngest and only female child in my family, I have always felt underestimated in my ability to be strong enough on my own and as an individual. I was always told that I was “fragile” or no one would believe I could really accomplish so much on my own, especially moving 3,000 miles away from home. This has always made me feel very misunderstood, as I have always recognized myself as a strong (physically and mentally) and independent individual with a clear direction in life and I don’t think anyone close to me growing up ever believed that was the case.

What message do you think every woman should hear?
Make decisions wisely and strategically and be less reactive to emotions. In other words, understand the power and use of logic when making decisions because we (as women) tend to make more of our decisions based on how we are feeling and I believe that is what causes some of us to struggle when it comes to the long-term. When you practice taking control and take a few minutes to think through a decision or a thought before responding, you will become more powerful with your choices and ultimately the outcome of your life.

What is your favorite thing about where you live?
My favorite part about Southern California is the enormous amount of opportunities and things to do in the area. Growing up in such a small town, I did not have much to do and even simply going to get Chipotle was a 20 minute drive! It is such a different lifestyle, but I love that I am fifteen minutes from the beach with many different food options, as well as great shopping centers, fitness studios, and more.

What do you love most about yourself?
What I love most about myself is that I am not afraid to be an individual of my own. In other words, I love that I choose to be different and make decisions based on what I believe is true and best for myself. This trait has allowed me to be bold in chasing my dreams and staying laser focused in my short and long-term goals. To simply put it, I am not afraid to be myself and make my own decisions because I am very self-aware.

What is the biggest thing you’ve learned along the way?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that pain is not as terrible as it seems. In fact, pain drives hunger and in all honesty, I believe it is better to face it sooner than later. When we experience deep pain, we are forced to determine how to resolve it with a short-term or long-term solution. Pain will make you suffer, but will also teach you the toughest lessons and experience no one else can teach you. And that can bring a lot of positive and life-changing results in the long run.

What motivates you most?
What motivates me most is my vision for where I want to be in the long-run. I do strongly believe that motivation is not as sustainable as we would wish, so I have always turned to focusing on something long-term and visualizing the journey to think backwards on the steps I need to get there. At the end of the day, it’s simply a question of how bad you want it and how hard you are willing to work for it.

What do you do on a daily basis to grow and move forward?
On a daily basis, I typically do at least 1-2 things self-care related, such as listening to a podcast, doing a workout or run, and I spend less time consuming what other people are doing. I truly believe that by consuming what others are doing and comparing our daily lives to theirs, we hold ourselves back from understanding our own potential and where we need to grow. I take pride in having a lot of self-awareness of my strengths and where I need to improve because I have taken a lot of time for myself to take care of my physical and mental health, which is a big key in helping one grow and move forward.

What is one thing people would be surprised to hear about you?
Most people do not know this, but my dream career is to be in the music industry, specifically as a House music DJ. I have always had a HUGE passion for this kind of music since I was 15 years old and I have a natural skill for performing, so it would be a dream of mine to be able to combine my biggest passion with a natural talent of mine. To be even more specific, I would love to have my vocals on a track of a well-known “house” artist if I were to be in the music industry.

What are your biggest passions?
Like most people, I do have quite a few passions. My main passions include music, anything wellness/health related, competing in sports, and traveling. As mentioned before, I have an immense love for house music (essentially EDM but a more specific beat) and I do love singing in my free time as well. As a competitive figure skater and USTA ranked tennis player, I have always loved staying in shape by training on and off the ice/court, which is where my passion for wellness/health stems from today. With that, it has also helped bring my competitive spirit with me in everything I do, which I use positively in all aspects of my life. Traveling has also always been a small passion of mine, especially just the nature of exploring new areas of the world and being able to do so with a friend/significant other that also is intrigued by the different ways of life around the world. Typically, I love relaxing and tropical spots or a big city with so much to discover.
